Over the past twelve months, my employer, Georgia Tech’s College of Lifetime Learning, has been building out its faculty and staff. I’ve had the opportunity to observe that process in various ways, from candidate talks to conversations that happen in the hallways after. One pattern became hard for me to ignore. Candidates arrive well-prepared. They know educational research and its various flavors. They fluently drop learning engineering into their answers. But, when the conversation turns to the College itself… something interesting happens: the terms start to blur.
“Lifelong” and “Lifetime” get used interchangeably. “Learning Sciences” and “Learning Systems” intermix into a vague gesture sitting in the same general space. The College’s mission, name, and positioning become hazy.
Sitting with over a decade of marketing and communications work prior to my research faculty role, I was struck by this nomenclature disconnect. It reminded me of the same lexical interplay ever-present in the education field itself, such as the interchangeable hierarchical pecking order, dependent on who you ask, between micro-credentials, alternative credentials, digital/open badges, digital credentials, comprehensive learner records, and learning-and-employment records.
I casually asked about the “lifetime” versus “lifelong” problem in my organization, which bubbled up one novel (AI generated) insight:
While they sound almost identical and are often used interchangeably, lifetime learning and lifelong learning have distinct nuances in education, sociology, and career development. The easiest way to separate them is to think of lifelong as the human habit of learning, and lifetime as the institutional or structural framework supporting it.
These terms share obvious family resemblance, and outside of this specific context, many of them are commonly treated as synonyms. But, as Rob Coyle’s semantic interoperability kindly reminds me, words matter. These lexical distinctions are critical to benchmark. It’s the difference between understanding what the focus is, and what it isn’t, in an educational discipline that commonly conflates technology novelty with learner gains.
Lifelong Learning: An Aspirational Principle
Conceptually, “lifelong learning” is older and broader than any single institution, positioning education as a continuous and total human activity. In the decades since UNESCO’s 1972 report, lifelong learning has become one of higher education’s most repeated phrases. Policy documents invoke it, institutional mission statements wave at it, and continuing education units claim it as their mandate. “Lifelong learning” absorbed so much broad, principled meaning that it eventually carried none.
Lifelong learning, in its most watered-down form, has come to mean little more than “instruction for adults.” Heck, lifelong learning is often confused with lifelong education. What we really attempt to say is something more personal and expansive: lifetime learning is human learning across all contexts, formal and informal, intentional and incidental, across an entire life. For marketing, it’s inclusively ideal. That translation to the learning industry, however, is less effective
Lifetime Learning: An Institutional Response
Contrasted to lifelong learning’s philosophical reality, “lifetime learning” describes what an institution can do about it. It situates the engineering of systems, pathways, and credentials that serve learners not at a single “traditional learner” point in their lives, but across multiple transitions: from exploration, to first career, to reinvention, to what comes after that. I looked to the College’s Strategy 2035 to get framing on engineering innovation: flexible, stackable, AI-enhanced, and globally accessible pathways that adapt alongside the learner rather than requiring the learner to repeatedly start over.
Learning: engineering the science
This same dual-lens approach recurs when framing “learning sciences” and “learning engineering”. Learning sciences draws from cognitive science, educational psychology, computer science, anthropology, and applied linguistics to ask a specific kind of question: how do people actually learn, in real-world contexts, and how can we design environments that support that learning more effectively?
Learning Systems takes the accrued science knowledge and designs, analyzes, and leads learning environments to drive real results, at scale, across real organizational and societal contexts. I draw distinction of scope and application. Learning Sciences asks why and how learning works. Learning Systems asks what to build, and how to lead it. The former generates theory and evidence. The latter generates functioning ecosystems, institutional programs, and organizational capacity.
An analogy: if Learning Sciences is the medical research behind a treatment, Learning Systems is the encompassing medical infrastructure: from hospitals, protocols, devices and machinery, training pipelines, to reimbursement models. It is a multifaceted economics-of-scale that gets that treatment to patients at population scale. The same thing, then, should happen with learning.
The future of learning is everywhere all at once
Look no further than the impressive success of vendor-designed learning management systems to see learning systems in action. While these systems may work well in traditional contexts for traditional learners, their behemoth ‘too-big-to-fail’ monolithic design philosophies crumble under “lifelong learning” contexts.
As I learned at UPCEA 2026’s Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA, the nation’s national laboratories struggle immensely to effectively scale learning in protected, classified settings.
Informal learning contexts displace and/or replace formal learning environments, where social learning occurs via influencers and content creators. Most of social media’s technological focus is on payment models for content creation, but perhaps more intention should be spent on what learners take away from content.
Technologies like learning and employment records (LERs) attractively fit in a future state where learning occurs naturally in sociocultural environments (stealth assessment?). Learners could either self-assess their learning accomplishments or receive granular digital breadcrumbs on learning experiences, tracked via opt-in or opt-out mechanisms. Through this, learners can fully naturally realize the intersection of hobbies and career to individually-held skills and competencies. These combos build a colleague continuously learning, whether through a hobby or a job.
Lifetime learning as a culture change agent
The ‘lifetime learning’ problem is more than a technology problem. It takes policy and business models to govern and lead such efforts. Those efforts then trickle down throughout the organization and into its brand identity itself.
When was the last time you saw a higher education organization’s marketing platform engage in informal learning that wasn’t advertising the student experience? I think about my partner’s social media feed, which shows a mixture of current news and events, cosmetology, and culture, all entangling entertainment with learning without ever announcing itself as educational. She’s not enrolled anywhere. She’s not pursuing a credential. She’s just learning, continuously, in the flow of life.
That’s what lifetime learning actually looks like in the wild.
Higher education has spent decades trying to be the gatekeeper of learning. What the marketplace is slowly realizing is that learning never needed a gate. What industry needs, and what innovative institutions like Georgia Tech’s College of Lifetime Learning are positioned to offer, is structure, credibility, and connective tissue between the scattered, informal, deeply personal ways people already grow throughout their lives.
I think this gives higher education a real opportunity to meet lifetime learning where it occurs: in the places people already are, at the transitions they actually face, with pathways flexible enough to honor the learning they’ve already done. By association, this evolves what a college can be: less a starting point, and more a companion across an entire arc of a life.
I don’t think we’re far from that. I think we just need to call it what it is.
